The Conference will take place in

November 2013 in Thessaloniki

The project “Olkas. From Aegean to the Black Sea. Medieval Ports in the Maritime Routes of the East” is intended to promote and highlight the medieval heritage preserved in the cities - ports of the northern Aegean and Black Sea. The goal of this recording and promotion of the surviving monuments is to highlight the cultural, social, cultural and economic relations between the areas around the Black Sea. These monuments, movable and immovable, reflect the historical circumstances in which has been created and developed the culture of these cities and they are also the living witnesses of the contacts between Constantinople and the areas inside and outside of the Byzantine Empire.

The aim of this conference is to raise issues related to the history and archeology of the cities-ports of the North Aegean and Black Sea, the ways of communication, as they are revealed through the study of the written sources, the port facilities and the people was working in them, the organization of the marine network which has secured the communication between coastal cities with the large commercial and administrative centers of that time but also the same ships that have transported goods and people from the Aegean to the Black Sea.

Sessions: The sessions of the Conference are:

1. THE CITY- PORTS. HISTORICAL APPROACHES

2. CULTURAL HERITAGE OF THE CITY- PORTS (e.g. castles, harbors). THE TESTIMONY OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MATERIAL (e.g. pottery)

3. COMMUNICATION AMONG THE PORTS – TRAVELS. THE TESTIMONY OF WRITTEN SOURCES (THE PEOPLE: TRAVELERS, MERCHANTS, PILGRIMS…)

4. HARBOUR INSTALLATIONS- PEOPLE WORKING IN THE HARBORS/ DIGNITIES RELEVANT TO THE FUNCTION OF THE HARBORS   

5. MEDIEVAL SHIPS (ARCHAEOLOGICAL MATERIAL, DEPICTIONS IN ART) – SHIPWRECKS

6. ENHANCEMENT – RESTORATION - SURVEYS
